Guide to Peruvian Visas

Peru is a very friendly country and allows citizens of many countries to visit visa-free for tourism and recreation purposes. However, as soon as you plan to do business in Peru, stay longer in the country, study, work, settle or retire, Peruvian laws require you to have the appropriate visa.

Peru sometimes offers a rather confusing variety of visa types. In order to make the entire Peruvian visa system more transparent and easier to understand, we have collected them here.

In general, Peru distinguishes between temporary visas and resident visas.

Temporary Peruvian Visas

Temporary visas are for short-term stays in Peru (up to 3, 6, or 12 months depending on the visa). These include, but are not limited to:

  • tourist visa
  • business visa
  • temporary work visa
  • temporary student visa
  • volunteer visa

Peruvian Resident Visas

Resident visas are for long-term stays in Peru. These include, but are not limited to:

  • resident work visa
  • family visa
  • retirement visa
  • religious visa
  • resident student visa
  • digital nomad visa

Where to apply for temporary or resident Peruvian visas

Officially, you can apply for a temporary or resident visa if you are still outside Peru, or if you are already in the country, for example as a tourist.

Currently, Hungarian citizens can enter the country visa-free (so they don't need to apply for a "real" tourist visa at the Peruvian consulate), they can come to Peru as tourists, and then change their immigration status. The "Cambio de calidad migratoria" process can be requested through the Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones.
